Stanford Pre-Collegiate Global Learning Virtual Courses on Asia

Stanford University’s Stanford Program on International and Cross-Cultural Education (SPICE) offers highly prestigious online courses for high school studies focused on three different East Asian countries.

Reischauer Scholars Program (RSP)
Application Deadline: October 15, 2021
The Reischauer Scholars Program (RSP) annually selects 25-30 exceptional students from across the US to engage in an intensive study of Japan, with a special focus on the US-Japan relationship. Students hear from experts in the field, and interact with Japanese high school students. Students must attend 10 “virtual classes,” complete weekly assignments, an independent research project, and community presentations. Those who complete the course will earn Stanford Continuing Studies Program (CSP) credit and a Certificate of Completion from SPICE, Stanford University. There is a $1,000 tuition charge, but tuition waivers are available.

Sejong Korea Scholars Program (SKSP)
Application Deadline: October 15, 2021

This Stanford University SPICE program offers a similar online course on Korea, open to 20-25 high school students across the US. Designed as a college-level introduction to Korea, this course offers guided study and discussions directly with leading scholars, former diplomats, and other experts on Korea. There is a $1,000 tuition charge, but tuition waivers are available.

China Scholars Program (CSP)
Application Deadline: November 1, 2021

In this similar online course, 20 selected high school students will explore key issues in contemporary China, spanning politics, economics, social issues, culture, and the arts, with an emphasis on China’s relationship with the United States. Real-time “virtual classrooms” with leading scholars, experts, and former government officials from Stanford University and other institutions, provide a rigorous learning experience. The program also includes an opportunity to collaborate on a small project with high school students in China. There is a $1,500 tuition charge, but tuition waivers are available.
