Program Dates: June 24-August 2, 2024
The Howard University Department of African Studies announces its 2024 African Studies Summer Leadership Institute for high school students. Students will engage in six weeks of experiential learning where they will dialogue with world dignitaries, formulate policy, work in solution driven teams, network, meet faculty/administrators, and learn about the interdisciplinary aspects of African Studies at Howard University, ranging from culture, history, and traditions to foreign policy, environment, and gender. The program will include participation in daily interactive seminars focused on African affairs and history, weekly field trips around DC, a book club, work with graduate students to develop a group research capstone project, and a one-day New York trip to the African Burial Ground. This free summer program is for students from DC, Maryland, and Virginia in grades 10-12. DC students who have already registered for the Marion Barry Summer Youth Employment Program (MBSYEP) will be paid for their participation.
