New Japan in DC book now available

Globalize DC is thrilled to share the good news that our first publication, Japan in DC, has arrived from the printer, and is now available for purchase online on this website!

This book – over two years in the making – grew out of our summer 2017 Japan in DC program. For six weeks 20 curious DC public high school students traveled across the city to meet with interesting people and investigate the many ways that Japan has a presence in their own city. Through interviews, site visits, and a wide range of experiences, they learned about Japan in DC, and documented what they learned through writing, art, and photography. Work continued on the book after the initial summer program ended, and the result is a beautiful 128-page guidebook that we are excited and proud to share.

We had big plans to introduce our Japan in DC book this spring at a number of local events, including the National Cherry Blossom Festival’s annual Sakura Matsuri and at our own launch event. But coronovirus developments forced us to change our plans. As so we are now introducing this book online on this website.

With this initial printing, we are offering a PREVIEW price of $16 + postage. All proceeds from sales will be used to keep our Japan programs going during this very difficult time, and will support future Globalize DC student programs.

With special thanks to:

The wonderful students from our Japan in DC and Japanese Plus programs who contributed their writing and creative expressions to make the book so special. You’ll enjoy reading their unique perspectives on the people and places they visited, and on their experience of discovering the global dimensions of their hometown DC.

Heidi Ashton Yoon and Chanae Brown, our Japan in DC teachers, the creative front-line leaders on this project, who brought their own passion and knowledge of Japan to the project.

Our fantastic graphic designer, Manuel León, of www.potencialpuro.com, who committed to the project even as it stretched over months and years. We wanted a high-quality book that captured the energy and personality of our students, and he delivered!

All the many people in our local community who so generously made themselves available for interviews, who helped us make contacts with others, and who otherwise supported the Japan in DC program in big ways and small.

Our major funder, United States-Japan Foundation, who supported not only the design and publication of the book, but also the program that led to its creation. We truly could not have done it without you.
