Program Dates: June 26-August 4, 2017
App Deadline: March 31, 2017
This year Globalize DC will introduce a new six-week summer program, called “JAPAN IN DC,” for DC public high school students. Funded by a grant from the US-Japan Foundation, this program will be organized around the theme of exploring and documenting the presence of Japan in our city. DC is filled with individuals, institutions, and places associated with Japan. Think Cherry Blossoms and the Freer/Sackler, the Embassy of Japan and the US State Department, businesses, NGOs, students, academics, artists, chefs, entrepreneurs, and members of the Japanese American community – Japan is all around us. The program will be engaging, fun, and educational for the students. It will include readings, research, and discussions; site visits, meetings, interviews, and cultural experiences; and two final group projects.
As part of the Marion Barry Summer Youth Employment Program (MBSYEP), students will be paid for their participation. The program will operate Monday-Friday (June 26-August 4, 2017), 5 hours per day. Twenty (20) students will be selected for the program.
